How To Paint Chrysanthemums

10 Amazing (and Easy!) Tutorials

Introduction

Chrysanthemum flowers have this complex shape to them that I couldn’t simplify for my paintings. I then referred myself to some tutorials on how to paint chrysanthemums, and that’s when I learnt a few tricks. These videos helped me get a grip on my chrysanthemum painting, and showed me certain ways that would end up making the whole process and painting experience quite easy and delightful.

To paint chrysanthemums, you can follow two different approaches. The first approach is the one with acrylics. It’s a more subtle approach, and leaves you with some sublime coloring. Then there’s the watercolor approach where you’re left with the option to either go for a vibrant look, or for a more abstract, or lightly colored artwork.

Vibrant Painting of Chrysanthemum Flowers

Vibrant Painting of Chrysanthemum Flowers

This vibrant chrysanthemum painting will make anyone fall in love with the flowers. The coloring here is sublime and you can’t find any fault with it. Like the previous painting, this artwork too lacks depth. But it still manages to make up for it with the amazing coloring. In my opinion, the artist should’ve ensured a proper transition from one shade to another for a more realistic look, and for a bit of depth. But even without that, this painting is a 5 out of 5.

Minimalistic Painting of Chrysanthemums

Minimalistic Painting of Chrysanthemums

This one is less of a painting, and more of a mural or graffiti you’d see on walls. It’s a very basic design and an equally basic coloring approach. The overall artwork lacks depth and shades, but I’m guessing the artist intended to keep things that way so that he could have a minimalistic painting in the end.

Simple Chrysanthemum Painting in Watercolor

Although this looks quite simple, it’s still a beautiful painting in my opinion. The chrysanthemum flowers here don’t really resemble much of the original flower. However, it’s this simplicity that I really liked here. I haven’t tried painting this yet, but I soon will. While doing so, I’ll try to think of a way by which I can give it a bit depth.

For our next video demonstration, we look at the process of painting a realistic chrysanthemum flower using watercolors. It’s mindboggling as to how the artist was able to pull of such a vibrant and realistic look by simply using watercolors. The painting is indeed quite difficult to work on, and I wouldn’t recommend you try this unless you’re a professional artist, or have a lot of experience in acrylic painting.

Abstract Chrysanthemum Painting Demonstration

Abstract Chrysanthemum Painting Demonstration

This painting here is an abstract representation of an actual chrysanthemum flower. The colors are merely layered on to the canvas, and then allowed to bleed freely into one another. It’s a mess, but a pretty one, if you ask me. Try this painting not for the accurate results, but for the fun of it, and for enjoying some soul soothing abstract painting.
