Green and Purple: An Introduction

Whenever we think of nature, perhaps green is the first color to cross our minds! And if we consider purple, it may not be as common as green in the outside world, but it is a favorite of many. We love it too, because it is a balance of red and blue - two primary colors that are warm and cool respectively. So what do these wonderful colors green and purple make when they are mixed? Keep reading to learn everything you need to know about this unique mix!

Mixing green and purple would give a greenish brown or a muddy grey. Since these are neutral colors, they could be used to mix with other colors to create tones.

1. Understanding the Color Wheel and Color Theory

Whether grey or brown, neutral colors don't appear on the color wheel.

Green is a secondary color because it is created by mixing yellow and blue. Purple is also a secondary color that is mixed by bringing red and blue together. So when all three **primary colors** are brought together, they result in a **neutral color**.

Now depending on the proportions of the primary colors in green and purple, the resulting hue could be either brown or muddy grey.

2. How to create multiple hues of grey and brown?

When mixing green and purple, you need to be sure about the hues you’re using. The main thing is color temperature because if you’re using warm greens and purples, the resulting brown or grey would be warm too. It all depends on the kind of neutral hue you’d like to get by mixing green and purple.

What happens if you add more green to the mix?

The green you use could either be cool or warm. Since green is a mix of yellow and blue, a warm green would have more yellow mixed into it. Whereas a cool green would have blue mixed into it.

Some of the most common green hues are as follows:

  1. Sap green
  2. Viridian green
  3. Emerald green

What happens if you add more purple to the mix?

If you’re mixing more purple, the obtained hue would incline more towards a muddy grey. Depending on the kind of purple you use, the grey could be either light or dark.

  1. Pastel purple
  2. Red-violet
  3. Blue-violet

3. What is the color psychology of brown and grey?

Brown and grey have a harmonious effect together and separately.

Dark brown, light brown and grey

Although both brown and grey are neutral colors, they have different effects on the mind.

Brown: It’s one of the most common colors in the natural world. Hence, it promotes security, wisdom, simplicity, support, honesty, appreciation and harmony. But if you don’t use the right tonal values, it may look boring or dull.

Grey: Since grey is a lighter version of black, you could expect a bit of sophistication. Grey reflects simplicity, maturity and intellect. On the other hand, it could also represent indecisiveness, boredom and pessimistic behavior.

4. How to use greenish brown and muddy grey in art

Greenish brown can be used to represent forest landscapes and muddy grey to tone down colors.

Muddy grey strokes and texture

If your brown appears greenish, you could easily use it to represent scenery in landscapes. But if it leans more toward brown, you could use it to mix with any other color to create an earthly shade.

On the other hand, using muddy grey is a much easier way to create tones of any color. If you have an extremely saturated color but you want it to look slightly dull, then mixing it with muddy grey is your best bet.

5. How to use greenish brown and muddy grey in design

Browns and greys create a welcoming and relaxing atmosphere.

Greenish brown and muddy grey can be used together to create a natural and relaxing touch.

Here are a few points to remember whenever you decide to incorporate brown and grey into any space.

  1. For jam-packed spaces, light values of neutral colors make the room look more open.
  2. When using brown and grey together, remember to keep contrast in mind. If one of the colors is dark, the other one must be lighter. Unless you want an all-dark or all-light look to compensate for the largeness or tiny size of a space.

PRO-TIP

add bronze objects

Dark bronze can look very good with a greenish brown or muddy grey backdrop. Since it is reflective, even the darkest of metallic objects could shine against colors having dark shades.

Conclusion

So mixing green and purple would give you either a greenish-brown or a muddy grey. If you add more green, you will more likely get grey and if you add more brown, you would most probably end up with a greenish-brown or dark brown. Since both of these are neutral colors, you could mix them with other colors to create lighter and darker values. And when it comes to design, browns and greys can be used as is with multiple values or even paired with any other color at all.
