How to Draw Tree Roots Step by Step

I could not draw tree roots well enough. They would always end up in a poor state, no matter what I did. Eventually, I took a more planned approach to drawing them, and came up with a much easier solution. This is something beginner level artists can benefit from if they are having trouble with tree root drawings as well.

I draw the roots wave and keep the spread out. Avoid drawing them dead straight. The ends are mostly pointy, but you can keep them blunt too if you want.

Start from the right

Draw some wavy roots.

Move over to the middle

Keep going with the roots.

Now the left

The roots branch off into more roots.

Draw the group

Draw an uneven line a bit above the roots.

Show the soil

Draw a half circle around the roots.

Throw in a few rocks

Sketch some uneven circles and ovals.

And some more

Draw a few more rocks.

Continue drawing the rocks

The soil under the tree is quite rocky as it seems.

Just a few more

You are almost done.

Last couple of steps

Sketch the small details now.

Final outlines

Use a dark pencil to do the final outlines.

Coloring time

The drawing is ready. Now you just have to color it.
